Song of The Month: SEPTEMBER 2023
A little while ago, I was listening to songs with my sister. Among those songs, one stood out to us. It was a new song by for KING & COUNTRY called What Are We Waiting for?. The moment the opening line played, Grace and I looked at each other, saying at the same time- what an inspiring song this is. The lyrics are AMAZING! Let me tell you, that song was on repeat!
It begins with a question, the theme— What are we waiting for? I’m not sure about you, but I often hear “What are we waiting for, let’s go!” Those words are spoken when my family are going to the dam to spend a summery day there or if we’re going to Youth on a Friday night. They convey excitement. Already, this simple sentence in itself is asking believers what the important things are in our lives, things that fill us for excitement because we want to do them.
Then the song goes on…
The chorus holds four more challenging questions we need to ask ourselves.
Why are we wasting time like someone’s making more?
What are we praying for?
What are we saving for?
What if we could be the light that no one could ignore?
Hold up. Reread those words. What a challenge!
Personally, the first line is the one that held my attention. Why am I wasting time like someone’s making more? I forget that I only have so much time on earth to do the things that I feel are necessary. What are the things that I prioritise? Is it furthering the Kingdom? Or is it furthering me? Are the things I pray for and the save for going to be used to share God’s Good News? These are some huge questions I’ve had to ask myself.
The second verse shows you how you can change your mindset and put your priorities in their rightful places. Dream about what you could change and live it out before it’s too late. The God we serve is a God of second chances. He is waiting for us to realise what we do wrong and take things back to him.
What Are We Waiting For? ends the way it begins, asking a believer what we’re waiting for. This time, it asks it more personally. What are you waiting for? I think I’ll end with the same question.
What are you waiting for?
