Song of the Month: February 2024

As much as we would like to deny the fact, being a Christian means that we’ll have to deal with storms of suffering. Steady Me by Jeremy Camp presents us with that undeniable truth, but in those lyrics, there’s also encouragement.

The very first line says You never said I wouldn’t feel pain and a few lines later, you never promised I wouldn’t break. God didn’t promise that hardship, suffering and pain would be taken away—not until heaven! In fact, he actually promised that there will be suffering. In 2 Timothy 3:12 ESV it says, “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ will be persecuted.”

God has allowed trials to come in order for us to become more like Him. “In all this, you greatly rejoice, though now, for a little while, you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.” 1 Peter 1:6-7 NIV

So, we know that we will have suffering and we know why we have suffering, but there’s a promise in Steady Me that I haven’t mentioned yet.

Just after Jeremy Camp says You never said I wouldn’t feel pain, he reminds us of a promise from God, But You said You’d be with me ‘till the end. Similarly, after You never promised I wouldn’t break, Camp continues, but You promised you’d be right there when I did.

As believers we can rest on the truth that our God will never leave us. Romans 8:38-39 NIV reminds us of this; “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God.”

He is always faithful, always loving and always right there with us. Isaiah 43:2 ESV says, “When you pass through waters, I will be with you; and and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.”

When the light is fading, when my mind is racing, when my faith is shaken, You steady, You steady me. Jeremy Camp gives us a true reminder that our God is steadfast, our anchor in the storm. We can always rest in Him.

The fact is, we live in a broken world where there are trials. This world is broken, and dark are the days. But, we have hope. But your peace has spoken, I’m not afraid.

Don’t forget, when trials come, that God will be with you always. You are never abandoned, forsaken or forgotten. He will steady you.
